MUSIC THERAPY
Music Therapy is a psychological therapy, which uses the unique qualities of music as a means of expression and interaction between therapist and client. Music therapy encourages transformative experiences by using accessible instruments, music tech, sound, voice, breath, or movement, so that people can communicate in their own musical language. Sessions include active and/or receptive interventions and are tailored to meet the therapeutic needs of each individual person. Music allows expression and exploration beyond and deeper than words, and is particularly helpful where verbal expression is difficult.
HOW DOES IT WORK
Aims are therapeutic rather than purely musical. Shared music making and receptive techniques are used to facilitate emotional wellbeing and positive developments in behaviour. Music therapy sessions offer an opportunity to explore thoughts and emotions in a safe and contained environment. Music reaches people in very unique ways and can be a strong catalyst for positive change, personal growth, and social interaction.
Sessions usually last 30 – 60 mins and take place on a weekly basis, although there is flexibility to accommodate individual needs. An initial block of up to 3 assessment sessions gives an indication of the suitability of music therapy for individual needs, and the length of therapy required.
